🌿DIY Cat Tree ~ Our Cats Deserve to Climb and Play!

posted in: Pet Comfort | 0

The best part? If you are going to DIY a cat house, you don’t need to spend a fortune.

Although I chose to build a cat house out of old pallets and baseboards, you don’t have to because I picked out some very well-thought-out pieces for you to shop for one! Just scroll down to check them out if you’re here to find solutions for your own cat room!

About my DIY build.
Many of the boards used in this cat room were made from leftover wood and reclaimed pallets carefully taken apart and repurposed into shelves, ramps, and climbing platforms. You can also use extra boards sitting in your garage or yard, or visit your local lumber shop for inexpensive wood pieces to create your own custom design.

About a buy-it-yourself option.
There are endless ways to make the space unique and cozy. Add mounted wall climbers, scratching posts, soft cat pillows and beds, calming curtains, baskets of toys, greenery, and framed photos of your beloved pets to make the room feel warm and inviting.

Whether your space is large or small, the sky truly is the limit when it comes to designing a peaceful climbing retreat for your furry friends.

Most importantly ~ have fun with it.

Don’t want to build? No problem!

Here are some options for you to create a stunning cat room, or cat living room ~ if you don’t have a spare room like I did to offer up to your cats, that both you and your cats will absolutely love!

Don’t want to DIY a Cat House? Imagine this!

Some cats love tall climbing shelves, while others prefer cozy napping corners tucked away near a sunny window. As you build and add new features, you’ll quickly see your cats come to life with excitement, curiosity, confidence, and joy. Watching them race up ramps, stretch out on shelves, or curl up in their new favorite nook is one of the sweetest rewards of creating a DIY comfort space made with love.

And what dog wouldn’t love to play here too?

🌿 Comfort for pets truly becomes comfort for people too.

Another Option for your Cats!

“A cozy cat room isn’t just a space for your pets ~ it becomes a peaceful little sanctuary filled with love, comfort, and joy for the whole home.” 🐾🌿

If you love the look of a more substantial, furniture-style cat tree, this beautiful self-standing wooden cat house offers the perfect blend of elegance, comfort, and functionality. Unlike many traditional carpet-covered cat trees, this design features sturdy wooden platforms and soft neutral tones that create a calm, modern appearance while still giving your cats an exciting place to climb, lounge, and play.

A Stunning Piece for your Living Room!

The larger wooden platforms provide excellent support for bigger cats like Norwegian Forest cats, Maine Coons, or multi-cat households where stability matters. The spacious levels allow cats to comfortably stretch out and relax, while the soft hammock-style loungers create cozy resting spots for afternoon naps in the sunlight. The enclosed cubby at the bottom also gives shy or quiet cats a safe little retreat when they want privacy or downtime.

One of the most beautiful features of this cat tree is its airy, furniture-inspired design. The combination of natural wood accents and soft cream posts helps it blend seamlessly into living rooms, sunrooms, or dedicated cat spaces without looking bulky or overwhelming. It feels less like a pet accessory and more like a thoughtfully designed piece of home décor ~ perfect for cozy, calming homes that prioritize both comfort and style.

Because the structure is self-standing and vertically designed, it also helps maximize climbing and play space without taking over the entire room. Cats naturally love elevated spaces where they can observe their surroundings, nap peacefully near windows, or safely interact with other pets and family members from above. This style of cat tree encourages healthy exercise, mental stimulation, and relaxation all in one beautiful setup.

For homes designed around peaceful living and pet comfort, this type of modern wooden cat tree creates a warm and inviting environment where cats truly feel like family, and let’s face it ~ it’s a stunning discussion piece for your living room or cat room.

And…did I say yet ~ I BUILT this DIY CAT HOUSE ~ ALL BY MYSELF!

Yes, I did! Here is proof!

The first thing I did was call my local Rona store to ask if I could grab free pallets behind their store, and they said yes! So I backed up my truck and grabbed about 10 pallets. I spent the next few weeks, a few hours every day after work, pulling pallet boards apart. I left some boards intact, which I used for the base of the cat house. I cut some pallets apart by trimming off the ends, so I didn’t have to spend extra time pulling rusted nails out of the boards. I also had a pile of leftover baseboards in my garage, which I used for some of the inner wall dividers.

It took me a while, but the result is one of the most useful and heart-warming projects I’ve ever completed ~ my cats love it so much! They are always climbing up and down, hopping to and from, and they rotate sleeping in the different bed sections. My cats never seem to sleep in the same spot two days in a row. They use the entire cat house! That warms my heart!

And, every cat needs their own photo wall; and of course ~ carpet and curtains!!

Cat houses are so much fun!

Looking for a cat climber ~ or ~ cat cratcher?

I must say I tried to find another round plush cat cave because my cats love it so much. Although I couldn’t locate the same one, I’m sure because I got mine a few years ago, what I did find was a “scrat-post” cat cave that I know for a fact, my cats would love (and use) so much more. I may just have to get one for my new “Pebbles”!

Creating this DIY cat room has truly been a labor of love, and seeing my cats safely climbing, lounging, playing, and relaxing in a space designed just for them fills my heart every single day. 🐾💛 It reminded me that our pets deserve comfort, enrichment, and peaceful spaces just as much as we do.

I know not everyone has the time, tools, or ability to build an entire cat room from scratch like I did ~ and that’s perfectly okay. That’s why I also shared a variety of beautiful cat furniture pieces and cozy inspiration throughout this post to help you create your own special cat space more easily.

Even adding a few thoughtful climbing shelves, cozy beds, scratching areas, or cat trees can completely transform a room into a comforting little sanctuary your cats will absolutely love. They truly deserve it ~ and honestly, watching them enjoy it is one of the most rewarding feelings in the world. 🌿🐱

Whether you decide to build your own DIY cat haven or simply add a few cozy pieces to your home, I hope this post inspires you to create a space filled with love, comfort, fun, and happiness for your furry companions. 🐾 ~ Rosemary
